Kala Doria

[Crossposted from sarangi.info, 27 February 2007]

This version of Kala Doria, a wedding song, was frequently played on Radio Pakistan in the early 80s. I didn’t understand the words back then, but still liked the music, and possibly, the sarangi accompaniment. Now, I also appreciate it as a busy, cheery and energetic account of domestic affairs (kameezan silk diyan ey Delhion aya ney), prudence (kukkri oh leyni jeyrri andey dendi ey), reservations (ke sohrey nai jaana sass burr burr kardi ey), splitting (ke jaa ke puttar de kann parrey haneray ney), upheavals (oh aakke amma de uss pharr lai soti ey), skepticism (nikkiaan wadiyaan di na kadde sahara ni), assertiveness (sohra de chirrkaan meri jutti sehndi ey), and problem solving (ke chotay devar nu mein aap viyani aan).

This recording has intermittent pitch variation:

Kala Doria

kaala doria kundey naal arraya oe
ke chota devra bhabi naal larraya oe

chotey devra teri door palaai vey
na larr sohneya teri eik parjhai vey
channa choori da na maakhan aanda ni
leyja patta ey mera pohla khanda nai
oh kaala doria kundey naal arraya oe
ke chota devra bhabi naal larraya oe

oh kukkri oh leyni jeyrri kurr kurr kardi ey
ke sohrey nai jaana sass burr burr kardi ey
kukkri oh leyni jeyrri andey dendi ey
sohra de chirrkaan meri jutti sehndi ey
oh kaala doria kundey naal arraya oe
ke chota devra bhabi naal larraya oe

oh sutthan cheeth dian Multaano aya ney
ke maanwan apniyan jeyna reeja layan ney
kameezan silk diyan ey Delhion aya ney
tussan beygaanania jeyna gallon lahayan ney
oh kaala doria kundey naal arraya oe
ke chota devra bhabi naal larraya oe

oh sun lai gall kissey, te phabo meri ney
ke jaa ke puttar de kann parrey haneray ney
sun ke watt barra tholey nu charrhaya oe
lai lag mahiya sade naal larraya oe
oh kaala doria kundey naal arraya oe
ke chota devra bhabi naal larraya oe

oh aakke amma de uss pharr lai soti ey
ke murr ja sohneya teri chann jai voti vey
nikkiaan wadiyaan di na kaddi sahara ni
tur ja peyke tu mein ranwa kunwara ni
oh kaala doria kundey naal arraya oe

ke chotay devar nu mein aap viyani aan

Absolutely charming. I had no idea of how to translate, but your context gives me a good vision. Nice post!
