    Education has, like any other noble pursuit, become Mcdonald-ized. It deeply saddens me that in today’s one cannot pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge and even if one tries to do so, risks living on a salary that is insulting to say the least. It is therefore imperative to look at the education industry to be able to answer the question of creativity in both thought and action.

    I had thought of commenting on this talk but after listening to it and the ensuing discussion, I felt they had considered many aspects of unschooling and how it may not even be an option for most children. For those who can manage, it remains a matter of choice and may prove to be very useful. Also, there is no essential connection between creativity and money.

    I do wonder if Astra Taylor would have done any less well if, other things being equal, she had gone to a public school. Speaking for myself, there was not a single day that I liked going to school, and it took several years before I realized that I was not necessarily averse to learning.

    The practice of placing individuals under ‘observation’ is a natural extension of a justice imbued with disciplinary methods and examination procedures. Is it surprising that the cellular prison, with its regular chronologies, forced labour, its authorities of surveillance and registration, its experts in normality, who continue and multiply the functions of the judge, should have become the modern instrument of penality?       This boils down to the nature vs. nurture argument. Provide the child with an environment that helps develop his/her talents/passions. However then the question of sustenance comes up. One cannot expect to keep an learning friendly environment in let’s say Pakistan if they pursue Sanskrit studies or Celtic poetry. The classroom, or absence thereof – therefore always has to be seen in relation to society.
