‘In the mountain depths…’ by Sarumaru no Taifu

Translated by Clay MacCauley

In the mountain depths,

Treading through the crimson leaves,

The wandering stag calls.

When I hear the lonely cry,

Sad–how sad!–the autumn is.

About the author: Sarumaru no Taifu, also known as Sarumaru no Dayū, was a waka poet in the early Heian period of Japan.
